Let us understand the difference between Emotional Quotient (EQ) and Intelligence Quotient (IQ). In simple language if we were to explain Emotional Quotient it would be your level of emotions “Your EQ is the level of your ability to understand other people, what motivates them and how to work cooperatively with them,” says Howard Gardner, the influential Harvard theorist.
On the other Hand Intelligence Quotient or IQ is Human Intelligence and is based on the total score derived from several standardized tests.
Commonly it is believed that having a higher IQ is far more important to having a Higher EQ, but that is not true entirely. EQ is far vaster than commonly understood by us; we need to be more knowledgeable and aware about EQ.
To develop IQ or human intelligence it is necessary that we educate our children. You will agree that the education being provided to a group of children in a Particular class is the same to each and every child present, then why do some children do better than the rest. When we teach all the children the same thing why is that the children as per their own abilities absorb or gain proficiency in different manners. This is because a child will be able to deal and absorb the content as per the EQ level of the child. EQ shapes our interaction with others and our understanding of ourselves.
Let me try and Explain EQ with a live example – You must have all heard about Dr. Stephen William Hawking, he is an English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Director of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge. His scientific works include a collaboration with Roger Penrose on gravitational singularity theorems in the framework of general relativity and the theoretical prediction that black holes emit radiation, often called Hawking radiation. The unique thing about Dr. Hawking is that his total body is paralysed even then he is the director of research and has done path breaking work in relativity. A person who is not able to even utter a single word easily or walk by himself and is bound to the wheel chair has helped us discover and unravel many secrets of the universe. He has shown the world that there is no comparison between the mental strength of the brain as compared to the Physical strength of the body. The Brain is far More Powerful. Is all this only due to IQ? No after one level the contribution of EQ becomes higher than that of IQ. If we even for the sake of argument decide that Dr. Hawking had a weak EQ then the IQ would have become a slave of his body and he would have been unable to do what he has done. Dr. Hawking due to his high level of EQ was able to with his Determination, Self Confidence and strong mental thinking able to erase the boundaries of IQ. Where did this power come from? The answer is simple EQ.
IQ can be measured by tests conducted to measure the intelligence of the child through a combination of tests which determine a score based on the age of the child and the comparative answers received from a wide section of children in the same age group.
EQ shapes our interaction with others and our understanding of ourselves. To develop EQ we need to focus on the following:
-
Belief in Self :-
Whenever we try to any work we should believe that “I will be able to this and with the best
results possible” we need to keep this belief high.
-
Self Awareness
The ability to recognize an emotion as it “happens” is the key to your EQ. Developing self-awareness requires tuning in to your true feelings. If you evaluate your emotions, you can manage them. The major elements of self-awareness are:
-
Emotional awareness. Your ability to recognize your own emotions and their effects.
-
Self-confidence. Sureness about your self-worth and capabilities.
-
Empathy
We need to develop the ability to recognize how people feel and it is important to success in our life and career. An empathetic person excels at:
-
Service orientation. Anticipating, recognizing and meeting the other persons needs.
-
Developing others. Sensing what others need to progress and bolstering their abilities.
-
Leveraging diversity. Cultivating opportunities through diverse people.
-
Understanding others. Discerning the feelings behind the needs and wants of others.
-
Acceptance & Motivation
We should be able to accept the situation even if the surrounding or the situation is not as per our liking. Accepting things and situations as they are also helps in increase of EQ.
Along with Acceptance there is also the need to motivate oneself to think positively and aim to set clear goals and kill the negativity while concentrating on the positive aspects that the situation or surrounding throws up to us. Being in the positive frame of mind at every point helps us in developing EQ.
-
Social Skills
The development of good interpersonal skills is tantamount to success in your life and career. In today’s always-connected world, everyone has immediate access to technical knowledge. Thus, “people skills” are even more important now because you must possess a high EQ to better understand, empathize and negotiate with others in a global economy.
For any mind development program it is very necessary that the children’s EQ has to be taken to the next level. It is very clear that all the successful people in this world who have a very high IQ and have attained success also have a very high EQ level. To understand this lets have a look at the people with the best IQ level in the world
